Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues throughout the body. This can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and other organs. Common symptoms may include fatigue, joint pain, swelling, skin rashes, and periods of worsening symptoms known as flares.
